What You Can Expect
The Business Systems Lead, CAD/PLM is the primary functional bridge between Engineering and Information Technology for CAD and PLM capabilities across the enterprise. This role is best suited for a professional who began their career in engineering design, product development, or a related engineering discipline and later transitioned into PLM, engineering systems, or digital engineering leadership.
This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct people management responsibilities. The person in this role serves as the organization’s key subject matter expert for engineering processes within IT, helping ensure that strategy, architecture, and implementation decisions reflect how engineering work is performed in practice.
The role is primarily focused on CAD/PLM strategy, governance, and process enablement, with meaningful involvement in migration and consolidation initiatives, including the movement of engineering data and processes from Teamcenter-based environments into PTC Windchill. This individual will help define how engineering workflows, CAD data structures, change processes, and governance models should operate in Windchill to support design efficiency, data integrity, and compliance in a regulated environment.
Work From office: 3days
Mode of work: Hybrid
How You'll Create Impact
Engineering and IT Liaison :
- Serve as the primary functional liaison between Engineering and IT for CAD and PLM-related capabilities.
- Translate engineering business needs, design practices, and product development workflows into scalable system requirements and functional solutions.
- Represent the voice of Engineering in IT planning, solution design, and prioritization discussions.
CAD/PLM Strategy and Governance - Define and guide enterprise CAD/PLM strategy, with a strong emphasis on Windchill and its alignment to engineering ways of working.
- Establish and maintain governance for CAD data structures, metadata, revision practices, release processes, lifecycle controls, and product structure integrity.
- Ensure system and process decisions support data continuity, usability, and long-term engineering efficiency.
Windchill Functional Leadership - Provide deep functional leadership for PTC Windchill and Windchill Workgroup Manager (WGM) in a multi-CAD environment.
- Partner with technical teams to ensure Windchill configurations and integrations appropriately support engineering process requirements.
- Help resolve complex process and system issues by combining knowledge of engineering workflows with an understanding of how those workflows are enabled within Windchill.
Migration and Consolidation Leadership - Lead or provide functional leadership for CAD/PLM migration and consolidation initiatives, including migration from Teamcenter-originated environments into Windchill.
- Define functional requirements, data expectations, process mappings, and acceptance criteria for migration activities.
- Evaluate migrated data and in-flight solutions to ensure preservation of design intent, assembly relationships, metadata integrity, and engineering usability.
Engineering Process Standardization - Lead the definition and rollout of standardized engineering processes across CAD and PLM platforms.
- Drive consistency in areas such as part and document lifecycle management, version and revision control, engineering change processes, release governance, CAD-to-BOM alignment, effectivity, and revision maturity.
- Support harmonization of engineering system practices across global teams, with primary collaboration focused in the United States.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Influence
- Build strong relationships with Engineering, IT, Quality, and program stakeholders.
- Influence decision-making through subject matter expertise, practical judgment, and a clear understanding of business and technical tradeoffs.
- Help stakeholders understand the downstream impact of PLM and CAD process decisions on product development, data quality, and operational efficiency.
- Compliance and Quality Support
- Ensure CAD/PLM process design appropriately supports regulated product development environments.
- Contribute to system and process decisions that affect design control documentation, traceability, change control, and released product data.
What Makes You Stand Out
- Working knowledge of multi-CAD environments, including the interaction between CAD authoring tools and PLM repositories across NX 2007, AutoCAD 2024, SolidWorks 2024, Solid Edge 2024, and Creo 10.
- Experience in a Medical Device or other regulated product development environment.
- Familiarity with design control expectations and engineering documentation practices, including concepts such as DHF, DMR, and controlled change processes.
- Experience supporting global engineering organizations and partnering across time zones.
- Exposure to tools used for project, requirement, or work tracking, such as Azure DevOps.
- Prior experience supporting multiple Windchill releases concurrently or participating in upgrade planning across major versions.
- Exposure to downstream integration points involving BOM governance, ERP handoff, or broader digital engineering transformation initiatives.
Your Background
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- 8+ years of relevant experience in engineering systems, CAD/PLM, or related technical roles, including earlier career experience in an engineering-focused function such as design engineering, systems engineering, or product development.
- Deep functional expertise with PTC Windchill 12 and 13, Windchill Workgroup Manager (WGM) 13, Teamcenter 12, Siemens NX 2007, and SolidWorks 2024.
- Strong knowledge of engineering process design within PLM, including lifecycle management, revision and version control, engineering change management, CAD data governance,
- CAD-BOM alignment, Windchill BOM Transformation, effectivity, and revision maturity.
- Experience leading or materially supporting CAD/PLM migration, consolidation, or transformation initiatives, including migration from Teamcenter 12-based environments into Windchill.
- Ability to interpret legacy and in-process engineering data structures and translate them into scalable Windchill process and data models.
- Ability to serve as a senior subject matter expert and lead through influence rather than direct people management.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Expected Areas of Competence: - Windchill / PLM Depth
